For an ordinary desktop the UPS question is simple, and most people over-think it. An office or home PC with a monitor draws far less than the marketing on the box suggests — a 600VA to 1100VA APC Back-UPS covers the overwhelming majority of Indian desktop setups, gives you several minutes to save and shut down, and protects the machine from the surges that follow a cut.

What draws power in this setup
Typical figures for Indian installations. Use the actual rating on your equipment where you have it — these ranges are for planning.
| Equipment | Typical draw |
|---|---|
| Office desktop (integrated graphics) | 60 – 120 W |
| Desktop with entry graphics card | 150 – 250 W |
| LED monitor (22" – 24") | 20 – 35 W |
| All-in-one PC | 50 – 100 W |
| External drive / speakers | 10 – 25 W |
| Router + modem | 15 – 30 W |
What size UPS you need
| Your total load | Recommended UPS | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 150 W | APC Back-UPS 600VA | One office PC and a monitor. |
| 150 – 300 W | APC Back-UPS 800VA | Desktop with a larger monitor and peripherals. |
| 300 – 450 W | APC Back-UPS 1100VA | Desktop with a graphics card, or two machines on one UPS. |
| Above 450 W | APC Back-UPS Pro | Workstations and creative machines — step up to the Pro range. |
How the numbers work: UPS VA ratings in these families assume a 0.6 power factor, so a 1100VA unit supports roughly 660 W. Size for peak draw plus about 30% headroom, not for average use.
Which type of UPS
Line-interactive Back-UPS. Economical, more than adequate for a standard desktop, and the range we sell most of.
Genuine APC units we stock for this
All prices are GST-inclusive and every unit ships with the full APC manufacturer warranty and a GST invoice.
Never put a laser printer on the UPS
A laser printer's fuser draws a very large surge when it warms up — often more than the UPS can supply — and will trip the unit or shorten its battery life. Plug printers into the surge-only outlets, or into the wall. This is the single most common mistake we see.
What backup time to expect
A lightly loaded 600VA unit gives a typical desktop several minutes — enough to save and shut down properly. If you want to keep working through longer cuts, size up and tell us your target; do not assume a bigger VA number alone buys much more time.
The battery, three to five years from now
Every UPS eventually needs a new battery, and this is where buying from an authorised partner pays off. A genuine APC RBC replacement battery cartridge typically lasts 3 to 5 years. When yours is due, enter your model in the Battery Finder and it will show the exact cartridge that fits, with live pricing — or check the battery replacement chart.

Frequently asked questions
Which APC UPS is best for a home desktop PC?
For a standard office or home desktop with one monitor, a 600VA Back-UPS is enough. Add a bigger monitor, peripherals or a graphics card and an 800VA or 1100VA unit is the safer choice. Share your setup on WhatsApp and we will confirm.
How many minutes of backup will I get?
It depends on the load. A 600VA Back-UPS carrying a light desktop typically runs for several minutes — designed to let you save and shut down cleanly rather than to keep working. Lighter loads such as a router alone can run far longer.
Can I plug a printer into my UPS?
Not a laser printer — its warm-up surge can overload the unit. Use the surge-protected outlets or a wall socket for printers. Inkjet printers draw much less and are usually fine, but the battery outlets are better reserved for the PC, monitor and router.
How long will the UPS battery last before it needs replacing?
A genuine APC RBC battery typically lasts 3 to 5 years, depending on how often the power fails and how warm the room is. When it is time, use the Battery Finder to get the exact RBC cartridge for your model.
