APC UPS for Gaming PCs in India

Reviewed by Subrahmanya S Hegde — Senior Engineer, 30 years with APC UPS systems.

A gaming PC is the load people most often under-size a UPS for. A mid-range build idles politely at 120 W and then pulls four times that the moment a game loads — and it is exactly during that spike that a marginal UPS drops the load. Size for the peak draw of the graphics card, not the idle figure, and you get a machine that rides out Indian power cuts without a hard reset.

Short answer: Entry build, one monitor and the router. → APC Back-UPS 1100VA. Work out your total load from the table below, add about 30% headroom, then divide by 0.6 to get the VA rating you need. Not sure? Send us your equipment list on WhatsApp and we will size it for you.

What draws power in this setup

Typical figures for Indian installations. Use the actual rating on your equipment where you have it — these ranges are for planning.

EquipmentTypical draw
Entry gaming PC (60-class GPU)200 – 300 W peak
Mid-range gaming PC (70-class)350 – 450 W peak
High-end gaming PC (80/90-class)500 – 750 W peak
Gaming monitor (144 Hz, 27")30 – 60 W
Second monitor20 – 40 W
Router + modem15 – 30 W

Above 850 W peakTalk to usA 1500VA Pro is the practical ceiling for a home socket; beyond it we would size differently.

How the numbers work: UPS VA ratings in these families assume a 0.6 power factor, so a 1100VA unit supports roughly 660 W. Size for peak draw plus about 30% headroom, not for average use.

Which type of UPS

Line-interactive Back-UPS is the right choice for almost every gaming build. Step up to an online UPS only if you are also protecting a streaming or workstation setup you cannot afford to drop.

Read the GPU, not the PSU

Do not size from your power supply's rating — an 850 W PSU does not draw 850 W. Size from what the machine actually pulls: roughly CPU peak + GPU peak + 80 W for everything else. A 650 W actual peak needs about 850 W of headroom, which is roughly a 1500VA UPS at a 0.6 power factor.

Keep the router on the UPS

Backing up the PC but not the router means the machine survives the cut and still loses the match. The router and modem together draw under 30 W — there is no reason not to put them on the same UPS.

The battery, three to five years from now

Every UPS eventually needs a new battery, and this is where buying from an authorised partner pays off. A genuine APC RBC replacement battery cartridge typically lasts 3 to 5 years. When yours is due, enter your model in the Battery Finder and it will show the exact cartridge that fits, with live pricing — or check the battery replacement chart.

Frequently asked questions

What size UPS do I need for a gaming PC?

Size from peak draw, not idle. An entry build with one monitor is comfortable on an 1100VA Back-UPS; a mid-range build wants a 1000VA Back-UPS Pro; a high-end GPU with dual monitors wants a 1500VA Back-UPS Pro. Send us your CPU, GPU and monitor and we will confirm.

Will a UPS let me keep gaming through a power cut?

For a few minutes, yes — long enough to save, quit cleanly and shut down, which is the point. A UPS is protection against losing work and against the hard resets that shorten a machine's life, not a substitute for a generator or inverter.

Do I need a pure sine wave UPS for gaming?

Modern PC power supplies with active PFC are happier on a pure sine wave, and some will complain audibly or refuse to transfer on a stepped waveform. If your build has a good active-PFC supply, prefer a Back-UPS Pro or an online unit. Tell us the PSU model and we will tell you.

Is a UPS or a stabilizer better for a gaming PC?

They solve different problems. A stabilizer corrects high or low voltage but gives you nothing during an actual cut. A UPS gives you battery backup and surge protection. In most Indian homes the UPS is the one you need; add a stabilizer only if your supply voltage swings badly.
