APC vs Luminous: Two Schneider Brands, Two Different Jobs

Where we stand: we are an authorised APC by Schneider Electric partner, so we are not a neutral referee — you should read this knowing that. We have not bench-tested Luminous equipment, so this page makes no claim about their specifications, prices, warranty terms or reliability. What it does is set out where each brand is aimed, where we would genuinely tell you to buy Luminous instead, and what we can actually stand behind on the APC side.

Where Luminous is aimed

Luminous is one of India's best-known home power brands — inverters, inverter batteries and solar — with a very large retail and service footprint. Luminous Power Technologies is part of the Schneider Electric group, which is also the parent of APC, so these are sister brands rather than rivals.

What they are genuinely good at: Whole-home backup: keeping lights, fans, a television and a refrigerator running through long outages, plus home solar — and a dealer presence in almost every Indian town.

Where APC is aimed

APC by Schneider Electric builds UPS systems for protecting electronics rather than for running a household: the Back-UPS range for desktops, routers, CCTV and billing counters, and the Smart-UPS range of online, double-conversion units for servers and racks. The range shares one replacement-battery system, the RBC cartridge, across the whole line.

When we would tell you to buy Luminous

  • You want the house to keep working through a long power cut — lights, fans, TV, refrigerator. That is an inverter-and-battery job, and it is exactly what Luminous is built for.
  • You are looking at home solar with storage, which sits in the Luminous range and not in the APC UPS range at all.
  • You want a large tubular battery for hours of runtime rather than minutes.

When APC is the better answer

  • You are protecting electronics — a computer, server, NAS, CCTV system, billing counter or router — where the machine must not see a gap in supply and must be able to shut down cleanly.
  • You need a fast transfer and a clean waveform, which is what a UPS is designed around and an inverter is not.
  • You want the RBC replacement-battery path documented, plus a GST invoice, installation and AMC from an authorised APC partner.

The question to ask about any brand

“Which battery will this take in four years, and can I still get it?”

Every UPS outlives its first battery. A unit you cannot re-battery is a unit you replace entirely, which is where the real cost lands. It is the single most useful question to ask before buying any UPS of any brand — and for APC we publish the answer: enter your model in the Battery Finder and it shows the exact RBC cartridge, or check the battery replacement chart.

What we can commit to on the APC side

  • Genuine APC supply — Authorised APC by Schneider Electric partner. Factory-sealed units, full manufacturer warranty, GST invoice on every order.
  • Sizing help — Tell us what you need to protect and we will size the UPS for you before you buy — on WhatsApp or by phone.
  • Installation — UPS installation and on-site service, so the unit is commissioned properly rather than left in the box.
  • Battery replacement — Genuine APC RBC replacement cartridges, matched to your exact model, for the life of the UPS.
  • AMC — Annual Maintenance Contracts to keep business-critical power covered.
  • Collection or delivery — Fast, fully-tracked delivery across India, or collect from our Bengaluru warehouse.

Frequently asked questions

Are APC and Luminous the same company?

They are sister brands. Luminous Power Technologies is part of the Schneider Electric group, and APC is Schneider Electric's UPS brand, so both sit under the same parent. They are not competitors so much as two ranges aimed at different problems: Luminous at keeping a home running through long outages, APC at protecting sensitive electronics.

Should I buy a Luminous inverter or an APC UPS?

Buy the inverter if the goal is lights, fans and a fridge through a multi-hour cut. Buy the UPS if the goal is that your PC, server, CCTV or billing machine never sees the interruption and can shut down safely. Plenty of Indian homes and shops sensibly have both — an inverter for the house and a small UPS on the computer.

Can I run my computer from a Luminous inverter instead of a UPS?

Many people do, and for light use it often works. The caveats are the changeover gap and the waveform: an inverter is designed for household loads, while a UPS is designed so a computer never sees a break at all. If the machine holds work you cannot lose, or it is a server or a billing counter, use a UPS for that load even if an inverter backs up the rest of the building.

Which one do I need for CCTV?

A UPS, in most cases. A CCTV system is a small, steady load, which is the best case for UPS runtime, and you want recording to continue without a gap. See our CCTV sizing guide for the device-by-device numbers.
