A UPS battery does not last forever. Knowing its lifespan – and how to stretch it – saves money and avoids surprise downtime.

Typical lifespan
A sealed lead-acid UPS battery usually lasts 3 to 5 years. In India, heat is the biggest enemy – a UPS in a hot, unventilated corner can age in 2 years, while a cool, well-placed unit comfortably reaches 4-5.
7 ways to extend battery life
- Keep it cool and ventilated. Heat shortens battery life; do not box it in.
- Do not overload it. Running near 100% stresses the battery – leave 20-25% headroom.
- Avoid full discharges. Frequent deep drains wear it faster than short ones.
- Let AVR do its job. Automatic Voltage Regulation corrects voltage without using the battery – vital on India’s fluctuating supply.
- Connect the right loads. Never plug a laser printer or high-surge appliance into a UPS.
- Cycle it occasionally. If power is very stable, an occasional controlled discharge keeps it healthy.
- Replace the battery, not the UPS. When runtime drops, a genuine RBC pack restores it for a fraction of a new unit.
When to act
If backup time has dropped or the UPS beeps a battery warning, it is time for a replacement battery. Explore genuine APC units and battery packs in our UPS collection.
