A UPS that arrives in a box and gets plugged into a wall socket is not installed — it is unpacked. Commissioning is what decides whether the unit protects the load properly, whether the battery lasts its full life, and whether your server actually shuts down cleanly when the power goes. That is the difference this covers.
What the installation covers
- Siting the unit — ventilation and ambient temperature are the biggest single influence on how long the battery lasts.
- Fitting and connecting the battery cartridge, and verifying the charge before handover.
- Connecting the load correctly, with the surge-only outlets kept for the things that must never sit on the battery.
- A load check against the unit's real rating, so you leave with headroom rather than a UPS running at its limit.
- Setting up the data cable and shutdown software (APC PowerChute, or your NAS or hypervisor's own integration) where the load needs it.
- A walk-through of the alarms, so a beep later means something to you rather than causing a panic call.
Why commissioning is worth it on a server or a rack
- A UPS with no shutdown agent protects the hardware but not the data — the server still dies mid-write when the battery runs out.
- Rack-mounted units need the load balanced and the runtime understood before you rely on them.
- Getting the surge-only versus battery-backed outlets wrong is the most common self-install mistake we see, and a laser printer on a battery outlet can trip the whole unit.

Do you install the UPS on site?
Yes. We supply, install and commission APC UPS systems, including battery fitting, load checks and safe-shutdown setup. Coverage depends on your location, so confirm your site with us before ordering and we will tell you exactly what we can commit to.
Can I install an APC UPS myself?
For a desktop Back-UPS, yes, and most people do — fit the battery, plug the load into the battery-backed outlets rather than the surge-only ones, and keep printers off the battery side. For a rack, a server or anything with a shutdown agent, commissioning is worth paying for because the mistakes are expensive and invisible until an outage.
What do you need from us before an installation visit?
The model you have bought or intend to buy, a list of what it will protect, where the unit will sit, and whether you need shutdown software configured. That is usually enough for us to confirm the visit and how long it will take.
Does installation affect the APC warranty?
No. We are an authorised APC by Schneider Electric partner, so supply and installation through us keeps the full manufacturer warranty intact, and you get a GST invoice for the whole job.
