When to Replace Your UPS Battery (RBC): Signs & Step-by-Step Guide

When a UPS stops holding charge, you usually do not need a new UPS – just a new battery. Here is how to know, and how to do it safely.

An RBC swap restores runtime for a fraction of a new UPS.

Signs it is time

  • Backup time has dropped sharply – 15 minutes is now 2.
  • Replace-battery warning (LED or periodic beep) after a self-test.
  • The unit is 3-5 years old – normal lead-acid lifespan.
  • Swollen battery or smell – stop using it and replace immediately.

What is an RBC?

An RBC (Replacement Battery Cartridge) is APC’s genuine drop-in battery pack matched to your model. The correct RBC keeps runtime, safety and warranty intact – always match it to your UPS model number.

Step-by-step replacement

  1. Note your UPS model number and order the matching RBC.
  2. Power down connected equipment (safest, though many models hot-swap).
  3. Open the battery compartment and disconnect the old pack’s connector.
  4. Remove the old battery; insert the new RBC and reconnect firmly.
  5. Close up, power on, and let it charge fully (often several hours) before relying on it.
  6. Recycle the old battery responsibly – do not bin it.
